FAQ

The Beans

All over the world! We proudly partner with farmers both small and large to bring interesting (and delicious) coffees to you that you can’t get anywhere else in Hong Kong.

Our roaster has been a professional coffee judge for longer than he would like to admit, traveling the world going to coffee auctions and trekking down dirt roads to evaluate and advise tiny coffee farms and cooperatives.

We are constantly on the search for new farms, new flavours and more environmentally friendly sources to partner with which means our inventory changes annually.

And of course, all our coffee is roasted in-house right here in Hong Kong.

Like you, we are very concerned about the environment and our impact upon it. To the best of our ability and knowledge our coffee qualifies as organic and some are bio-dynamically or use regenerative farming practices.

Although we have visited most of the farms and confirmed these practices first hand, most of these farms are tiny and cash-poor. As a result they cannot afford the licensing and inspection requirements to be “certified organic” so we have not included these labels on our site.

All of our coffee, with the exception of the blends, qualify as specialty coffee, which is defined as a score of over 80 by the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association).  Unlike wine scores, where it seems like very other bottle is getting 90+ points, getting your beans over the 80 point line is incredibly difficult.

Yes! Even if you are reduced to filtering with a (clean) sock our coffee will come out excellent. Our Roaster’s Choice level leans on the dark side but is very versatile with all preparation methods.

Unfortunately no. We would love to make your experience as convenient as possible, and while grinding your own beans is firmly in the mildly to very annoying category, we simply can’t do this for you.

The reason being, the second you grind your beans, you expose every nook and cranny to delicious coffee’s nemesis: oxygen. Too much oxygen and your coffee can go stale before you receive it in the post.

As delicious tasting coffee is our most important product we can’t take the risk of sending you a convenient but bland ground beans.

Unfortunately no. We have been looking into this but the process of decaffeinating beans is horrifying and decidedly environmentally unfriendly. Maybe one day.

Subscriptions

This depends on how frequently you request deliveries. To ensure we don’t repeat a coffee for a full 12 months, we switch the featured coffee once every 4 weeks.

If your subscription is for once every 4 weeks or more, then you will never get a repeat coffee.

If your subscription is once every 2 weeks then you should expect to receive the same coffee twice before you switch to a new one.

Yes why not? Place a subscription for 500g (or whatever you like) and leave a note in the checkout for how you want to split that up. Then you can enjoy a discounted rate and your light roast loving S.O. can sip their 100g, while you plough through 400g of espresso.

Well it depends on how you make your coffee and how strong you like your brew. For pour-over and french-press types, 30g of beans will make 500ml of brewed coffee (two cups). If you do espresso then 18g of coffee is used for a standard shot.

So our most popular size of 200g will yield about 12 cups of coffee or 10 shots of espresso.

Yep. Just send us an email at hey@beancurious.com asking to “skip a shipment” or “don’t send me coffee until XX date” and we’ll pause and auto-start your subscription again whenever you like.

Don’t know when you’ll be back? Also not a problem, we can pause your subscription indefinitely and when you’re back home just send us a message and we’ll fire it up again.

Yes, if you don’t mind industrial warehouses, very slow elevators and really kinda messy workplaces we’re in a warehouse in Wong Chuk Hang.

Deliveries

This happens very rarely but if your order doesn’t show up just send us a message at hey@beancurious.com and we will send you a replacement as soon as possible.

Sometimes if you order at exactly the wrong time, it will take you a week to get your coffee. We currently roast coffee twice per week: Mondays and Wednesdays. Our free shipping tier goes through HK Post which can take up to 3 days to reach you depending on where you are.  So if you order on Wednesday at noon, (just missing our roasting window) you may not receive your coffee for a week or more.

Yes! We can send our products anywhere in the world but you should stick with our accessories and other non-coffee products. Coffee is highly perishable and international shipping will take a couple weeks which is not a good combination.

Accessories

Yes, all of our accessories come with a 30 day no-questions-asked warranty. If you find any factory defects or just don’t like whatever we sent you, let us know and ship it back to us for a full refund.

No problem. Email us at hey@beancurious.com or WhatsApp us whatever it is that broke and if we can, we’ll send you a replacement part.

  1. Hi there, We’re a marketing agency that organize markets regularly, may I know if you would join market? We would like to invite you to a coffee & tea market. Kindly contact me by my email. Thanks!

  2. I wish to have more details on the bean subscribed, where can I find them please?

    1. Sean Okihiro

      Hi Sandy,

What details are you looking for? Do you have questions on how our subscription works or do you want to know more about the coffee we are sending out? You can email me directly at sean@beancurious.com if you would like a faster response. Thanks!

  3. Hi Team,

I am interested in Akirakoki Professional Electrical Burr Grinder.

Do you post to the UK (London) at all?

    Kind regards,
    Michal

    1. Sean Okihiro

Hi Michal, Yes we can ship to the UK! Just emailed you about the details. We’re thinking of including this in our checkout process as we’ve surprisingly had quite a few interested people from the UK and the USA since we posted the M520-A and Super M520-A last week.

  4. Is the Akira eletric burr grinder the Super M520A model or the regular M520A model?

    Thanks.

    1. Sean Okihiro

      Hi Leslie,

The silver model is the Akira Super M520A, and the black one is the normal Akira M520A with the plastic bin. I didn’t realise they were different models until you asked! I’ll split them up. Let me know if you have other questions,

  5. Do you grind the coffee beans as I don’t have a coffee grinder at work

    1. Sean Okihiro

      Morning Fiona!

Sorry but we don’t ship pre-ground coffee beans at this time as the quality of the coffee goes down very quickly after grinding. We do sell small, single serving grinders if you prefer!

  6. Hi, I just want to know where would your coffee be delivered to if I choose HK post as my delivery method? What’s the difference between HK post and home delivery?

  7. Do you carry decaf beans?

    1. Sean Okihiro

We do not carry decaf at the moment. Not sure where you can get fresh-roast decaf in Hong Kong, sorry we can’t help!

      1. That’s too bad. I like to have a coffee after dinner, but regular coffee is keeping me awake.

        Thanks for replying.

  8. vincent_wg_liu

How can I check whether the order has been dispatched? I haven’t received the email confirmation but the order was placed quite some time ago. Thanks,

    1. Sean Okihiro

      Hi Vincent,

We just wrote you about this order, cheers.

  9. Hi, what’s the different btw 400 grams every 4 weeks and 200grams every 2 weeks?
will there be 2 different kinds of beans on the every 2 week rotation?

    1. Sean Okihiro

Hi Jasper! Honestly there’s no difference, the 400g every 4 weeks is the exact same coffee as 200g every 2 weeks. 200g every 2 weeks just means your coffee supply is fresher, but some people prefer to get everything in one go which is why we offer 400g/4 weeks.

  10. g_candelario

Hello, i hv got a few questions about my subscription.
When will you send the beans after roasting? How long it normally takes (Mailing address = HK)?
Will you send me 2 bags of 200g beans once a month for “200g for every 2 weeks”?

    1. Sean Okihiro

Hello! We send the beans on the day of, or the day after the roast depending on when we finish. If you want your coffee sent via HK Post then it usually takes 1~2 business days to reach you depending on where you are. So when we ship out the coffee on Wed, you should receive it by Thurs or Friday.

Since months vary in length we send out coffee on a every-other-week schedule, but generally yes, you will receive 2 bags of 200g beans every “month” (i.e. a total of 400g for every 4 week period).

  11. Hi, I placed my order at 5Sep should ship by SF Express but I still can’t get my bean today. Can you please check for me.

    1. Hi! Just checked and we sent the coffee via HK Post by accident instead of SF Express. Our mistake, going to roast and ship you a replacement today! Thanks for your patience.

  12. I am not sure what coffee bean of current cycle when placing order, or i am not familiar with your website , with a bit confusion.
Appreciate your generous offer for free sample ,thank you.

  13. Do you sell coffee specifically for filter? We have a mocchamaster and only like to use filter beans vs. espresso beans. Thank you.

    1. Hi Navishka! We sell whole bean coffee, roasted to the level you want. We also use a mocchamaster and find that our normal roast beans (i.e. the roulette subscription) works great with filter coffee. If you have any other questions feel free to write me at hey@beancurious.com. Thanks!

  14. Hi, for coffee subscription to SG, how much will it cost for delivery and how long will it roughly take?

    1. Hi Bec! To ship to Singapore usually takes 7 days. We charge $40HKD for shipping (roughly $5 USD or $7.2 SGD).

  15. Hi
can you list out the previous coffee beans that has been sent out for the last six months?

    1. Hi Anthony! Sorry didn’t get back to you sooner. Sure thing the last six months were:

      1. Nicaragua, JavaNica “Cup of Excellence”
      2. West Java, Sunda Arumanis
      3. Ethiopia, Yirgacheffe
      4. Brazil, Sul Di Minas
      5. Colombia, Esmerelda
      6. Kenya AA

Hope that helps! If you have other questions let us know.

  16. hi, do you guys have other flavor coffee other than espresso? thanks!d

    1. Hi Daisy!

Yes we also do a light roast, and a roulette which is whatever roast level our roaster thinks is best for the bean of the month. You can select what you want at checkout. Does that answer your question? Let us know!

  17. I have been trying to make an order for several days but have gotten an error message every time. My emails asking for help have been ignored. I would appreciate some help. I’m trying to make a purchase as a gift and am running out of time so if I can’t get this working I’ll need to look somewhere else.

    1. Hi Aoife,

Sorry for the inconvenience, we just responded to your email. We’re working on a solution to the payment gateway, should be fixed by now. I’ll include you on the roast list and will be happy to send out your gift now so your girlfriend can receive it before Christmas. Please email us the name and address at hey@beancurious.com and we’ll ship it with the next roast while we fix the system. Thanks,

      Sean
